For Income-Qualified Las Vegas Residents
Lead Is A Serious Health Hazard, Especially To Small Children
The city of Las Vegas is partnering with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Health Sciences department to make lead-hazard assessments in older homes and then remediate the hazards to improve health and safety for low-income Las Vegas residents with small children. The city has obtained a three-year, $1.6 million grant from the federal Housing & Urban Development Office of Lead Hazard Control & Healthy Homes to fund the assessments and remediation.
Homeowners and/or renters must income qualify to participate; both houses and small apartment buildings (six units or less) located within city of Las Vegas limits will be eligible for assessment and remediation.
“The city applied for the grant as part of our efforts to increase and maintain the health and wellness of our residents,” said city of Las Vegas Community Services Director Kathi Thomas-Gibson. “We have strategic priorities to revitalize older neighborhoods and preserve affordable housing, as well as improve the educational outcomes of at-risk children. The Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes Program is an ideal way to address both the issues of health and of preserving affordable housing for low-income families. We also know that children exposed to lead hazards do not perform as well academically as their non-exposed peers.”
The program expects to assist 85 households in reducing lead hazards for children under 6 years old, as well as educate the entire community about potential lead-based hazards in their homes.
Homes built before 1978 can have lead-based paint throughout the house. The Las Vegas Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes Program is focusing on housing in the zip codes 89101, 89106, 89107 and 89108 – primarily wards 1, 3 and 5 – which are the older neighborhoods of Las Vegas.
