The city of Las Vegas invites residents to bring school-age youth to Lorenzi Park Saturday,
April 22, for the annual Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow Fishing Derby. The event will be held at the lake in Lorenzi Park, 3333 W. Washington Ave., where families can spend quality time together fishing. This event is for beginners as well as experienced anglers.
“I am excited to sponsor this annual fishing derby in Lorenzi Park, bringing families and
youth together to spend quality time,” said Councilman Barlow. “This will be a good time for all, while we introduce fishing to our young people, get outdoors together and build some new skills.”
Check-in is scheduled from 8 to 9 a.m. and the derby will take place from 9 to 11 a.m.
Students and their mentors can enjoy a bucket breakfast, supplied bait and a sack lunch at the derby, while supplies last. There will be a raffle drawing and a chance to win prizes for school-age youth who catch the first fish of the day, the largest fish and the smallest fish.
Families are encouraged to bring their own fishing poles. The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) will have 250 poles to lend, available to those with photo identification on a first-come, first-served basis.
The NDOW also will demonstrate backyard casting, knot tying, fly fishing and how to clean
fish. Lorenzi Park Lake is home to bluegill, largemouth bass, rainbow trout and channel catfish.
Those who wish to keep their fish should bring a cooler and ice for appropriate safe storage.
Admission to the fishing derby is free and no fishing license will be required. Any
community organizations, large groups or individuals who wish to serve as mentors should call
702-229-5443 for more information and/or group registration. Sponsors include the NDOW,
Outside Las Vegas Foundation, U.S. Bureau of Land Management, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police
Department, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Bully Busters and Victory
Baptist Church. KOAS Old School 105.7 FM Radio and DJ Thump will provide music and
announcements. See the flier.
