One Hundred Years Of The American Red Cross Of Southern Nevada To Also Be Celebrated
The Las Vegas City Council will recognize the local winners of the Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup

The Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup International Showcase is the largest international youth
soccer tournament in the country. It took place during Presidents’ Day weekend, Feb. 18-20. The annual showcase included 578 youth soccer teams, ages to 11-19, from 11 foreign countries and 27 U.S. states competing on 60 Las Vegas valley fields at 10 different parks. The event is cohosted by the city of Las Vegas and the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club, and brings an
estimated $23 million into the local economy, according to Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club
President Roger Tabor.
Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman will be recognizing Mayor’s Cup Head Referee Assignor John
Kennedy as the March Citizen of the Month. Kennedy has been in Las Vegas for 36 years and has
been integral to the success of youth soccer in the city.
In addition, Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian will recognize the 100th anniversary of the
American Red Cross of Southern Nevada. The lighting on the exterior of City Hall will be red
Wednesday night to recognize the work that the Red Cross does in the community.
Also, Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow will celebrate two high school students who won a
national architectural design competition. Both students attend the Advanced Technical Academy.
Finally, the City Council will recognize a team of employees from Las Vegas Fire & Rescue
for their efforts to help a mother and her young children find shelter and social services in the city.
