Margaret Bourke-White a Chautauqua presentation by Doris Dwyer
February 17, 2017
Doris Dwyer has been performing Chautauqua characters since 1994. She has performed several historical characters in nine states, including Life photographer Margaret Bourke-White, Donner Party survivor Margaret Breen, Puritan Anne Hutchinson and evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson. Dr. Dwyer holds a Ph D. in American history from Miami University and recently retired after a college teaching career spanning 43 years in four states, the last 35 years at Western Nevada College. She is the recipient of the Governor’s Humanities Award, the Regents’ Teaching Award and numerous other teaching awards. Margaret Bourke-White was a mainstay of American journalism in 20th century America. She was hired by publishing mogul, Henry Luce, as the first photojournalist for Fortune Magazine, a pioneering publication which began during Great Depression and is still in production. Luce also selected her as the first female photographer for Life Magazine and she quickly became a globetrotting icon at the height of her career. Particularly notable are her photographs of monumental 20th century technologies, such as steel furnaces and Public Works Administration dams, and her gritty coverage of the Russian, Italian, and German fronts, including the liberation of Buchenwald, during World War Two. She wrote nine books, among them several collaborations with novelist Erskine Caldwell, to whom she was once married.
This Humanities on the Road presentation is produced through a partnership between the city of Las Vegas and Nevada Humanities, and supported, by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
