14th Annual Festival Is Nevada’s Largest Literary Event
The 14th annual Vegas Valley Book Festival, to be held Oct. 15-17 in downtown Las Vegas and the Clark County Library at 1401 E. Flamingo Road, will bring together a wide variety of literary genres and cultural programs, with most events taking place at the Historic Fifth Street School at 401 S. Fourth St. The festival is expected to feature more than 120 authors and 50 events, including panel discussions, keynote speakers, readings, book signings, workshops, vendor exhibits, art exhibitions, spoken word performances and other special programs for a diversity of genres, ages and cultural backgrounds. Events are free and open to the public. On Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Historic Fifth Street School, the book festival will offer special entertainment, authors and activities for children, and a plethora of authors popular with adults and young adults. The festival site will host five stages with readings, entertainment and poetry; a food court with a variety of local food trucks; art and vendor exhibits; interactive writing projects; and many other special programs.
An Evening with Brad Meltzer

New York Times best-selling author Brad Meltzer opens the Vegas Valley Book Festival with his keynote presentation. Known for his No. 1 best-sellers “The Inner Circle, “The Book of Fate” and seven other best-selling thrillers, Meltzer is one of the only authors to ever have books on the best-seller list for nonfiction, advice, children’s books and comic books. An attorney, he is also one of the co-creators of the TV show “Jack & Bobby,” as well as the host of “Brad Meltzer’s Lost History.” Books will be available for purchase and a book signing will follow the talk. The Las Vegas Writes Project Volume Seven: “The Anarchy of Memories”

A collection of short fiction featuring Las Vegas icons, this year’s project is published by Vegas Lit. The new collection includes original stories by local authors Scott Dickensheets, Sonya Padgett, Douglas Elfman, Jessica Humphries, Drew Cohen, C.J. Mosher, Erica Vital-Lazare and Helen H. Moore. The public is invited to hear the authors participate in a panel together with moderator/editor Geoff Schumacher. The authors will read from their stories, discuss the project, answer questions, meet the public and sign the books. The new book will be available for purchase at The Writer’s Block event and at the Vegas Valley Book Festival Oct. 17 at the Historic Fifth Street School, 410 S. Fourth St. A project of the Vegas Valley Book Festival, the anthology is published in collaboration with Huntington Press, Nevada Humanities, Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Since its inception, the young-adult (YA) portion of the festival has been very popular. For 2015, more than 40 authors on eight YA panels will discuss their writings. The 2015 YA authors include those whose best-selling works are aimed at “tweens” and younger teens, as well as new Latino authors and those who write for older teens.

Focus on romance in Readers’ Tent 2 all afternoon, with three panels of best-selling authors, including Nancy Allen, Vicki-Ann Bush, Tracy Clark, Julianne Donaldson, Sarah M. Adult readers will find an array of offerings, including new and exciting genre panels on literary nonfiction, writing about food, true crime, poetry, politics, diversity, American westerns, mystery and comic books. Don’t miss the interview of award-winning author Claire Vaye Watkins at 3 p.m. in the auditorium. Book sales and signings and a special film showing will round out the festival.
