The city of Las Vegas, in conjunction with The Nevada Small Business Development Center (SBDC), is hosting a free event for residents looking to start a new business. The event will help potential entrepreneurs assess their ideas and investment, and explain requirements for beginning a business in Las Vegas. The event will be held Thursday, Aug. 20, from 7:15-9 a.m. at Las Vegas City Hall, 495 S Main St. Featured speakers include Cathy Brooks, local business owner at the Hydrant Club in downtown Las Vegas, city business license experts and Kathy Carrico from the Nevada SBDC.
The city of Las Vegas has been licensing 525 new businesses every month for the last six months, on average.
“While the city is seeing more businesses request licenses every month, retaining those businesses is always a challenge,” said Karen Duddlesten, deputy planning director. “The more prepared owners are to meet the challenges of a successful launch is a key element in seeing those businesses continue to expand and grow. We want to see everyone that comes to us be prepared to succeed. Successful start-ups are usually those with a clear business plan. We recommend using all the free resources available, including the new program offered by the Nevada Small Business Development Center.”
Nevada SBDC designed a new training program, Assess, License, Launch, that targets people at the idea and pre-business stages to take the assessment process seriously. The training program compliments the 10-page business assessment tool, available to the public on the home page of their website at NevadaSBDC.org.
“The people issuing business licenses in Nevada have been natural and essential partners of ours for 30 years” said Kathy Carrico, Nevada SBDC Training Director. “We all want to reduce the number of small business failures in our state, and what better way to do that than to pull our resources to help these valued community members? The assessment process, at the least, should tell someone if going forward has a shot before spending their time, energy and money. The licensing process should be painless and simple, and it can be when you know where to go and with whom to talk.”
Personally recruited by Tony Hsieh, Brooks will share her story, her vision, her hunt for the right retail property and the many processes she went through to launch the Hydrant Club in downtown Las Vegas. Brooks worked very closely with the city of Las Vegas and will share many insights and tips to help the audience move forward with their visions of owning a successful business.
Seating is limited and registration is required. R.S.V.P. online at www.NevadaSBDC.org, click training calendar. For program questions contact Kathy Carrico at (775) 784-6879, or kcarrico@unr.edu. For questions for the city of Las Vegas contact Jim Rickett at (702) 229-6482.
