Lied Middle School Students To Plant Trees With Councilman Steve Ross At 2:30 P.M.
Las Vegas Ward 6 Councilman Steve Ross, Las Vegas City Manager Betsy Fretwell, National Junior Honor Society students from Lied Middle School and their advisors (including Suzie Hinrichsen, Tamara Luz and Vice Principal Christie Ford), and city of Las Vegas staff will plant two Mondell pine trees starting at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in Polly Gonzalez Memorial Park in honor of Arbor Day. Councilman Ross also will present a proclamation from the mayor and City Council. The park is located at 5425 Corbett St. See the map.
During the event, Cayenne Engel, a resource management officer with the Nevada Division of Forestry, will present the city with a Tree City USA flag. This marks the 23nd year Las Vegas has earned this recognition from the National Arbor Day Foundation because of the city’s program to care for community trees.
National Junior Honor Society students from Lied Middle School will perform Anne Bronte’s poem, “The Arbour,” and place a time capsule with the trees they plant.
“I am looking forward to sharing this tree planting with the Honor Society youth of Lied Middle School,” Councilman Ross said. “We’ll be educating the youth while we add these fast-growing trees that thrive in heat, drought and wind. Adding drought-tolerant trees is part of the city’s sustainability plan.”
The city of Las Vegas has an ongoing program to plant trees in our community and in our parks. The city established a tree ordinance in 1950. Today, city staff work closely with community volunteers who participate in the program to plant and maintain trees. Trees enhance air quality, reduce energy consumption and costs, reduce erosion, provide shade and renewable resources, produce oxygen, provide habitat for wildlife, increase property values, beautify our community and benefit the environment overall.
