Enjoy Corporate Challenge Opening Activities March 1
Community Invited To Enjoy Family Fun, Parade, Opening Ceremonies & Entertainment
The community is invited to enjoy Corporate Challenge opening activities Saturday, March 1, at the Downtown Container Park at 707 Fremont St. Events and participation are free.
Family fun will be offered on Fremont Street between Seventh and Eighth streets from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. Activities will include a rock climbing wall, bounce houses, a trackless train, bumper cars, carnival games, face painting, cotton candy/popcorn vendors, and a petting zoo.
At 5:30 p.m., the Executive Relay will begin inside the Downtown Container Park. This comical timed event features teams of six executives from each organization competing to tie a necktie, travel to work, recycle correctly, alphabetize paperwork, flip pencils and play clipboard tennis. Representing the city of Las Vegas will be City Manager Betsy Fretwell, Ward 6 Councilman Steven D. Ross, Ward 3 Councilman Bob Coffin, and from Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services, Director Stephen Harsin and Deputy Director Lonny Zimmerman.
At 7:30 p.m., the annual Parade of Banners begins at Fremont and Seventh streets and will wind its way through the Container Park. Companies will present their banners on the park’s center stage. Opening ceremonies will follow the parade on the Container Park center stage from 8 to 9 p.m. From 9 to 11 p.m., live stage entertainment is planned on the Container Park center stage.
Corporate Challenge is a way for employees to build teamwork and friendships while being more physically active. It has helped to foster company pride, corporate wellness and unity since 1985. Companies are divided into three divisions, based on the number of employees. This makes competition more fair, so companies with only a few employees are not challenging those with a base of thousands. Smaller companies that share business often join forces to form a combined team. Many of today’s most successful local organizations have been involved in this annual activity for many years.
Events will continue through May 17, and include most sports as well as less strenuous activities — a blood drive, chess, 8-ball, kart racing, poker, table tennis, shuffleboard, horseshoes, bocce and a T-shirt design contest. Some 20,000 players and spectators are expected to participate throughout the 36 events. Corporate Challenge is operated by the city of Las Vegas.
