City Launches Pack In, Pack Out Pilot Program At Floyd Lamb Park At Tule Springs
Program Encourages Visitors To Recycle More
To encourage recycling at local parks, the city of Las Vegas has kicked off a “pack in, pack out” pilot program at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, located at 9200 Tule Springs Road. The program encourages visitors to bring everything out of the park that is brought in.
Upon arrival at the park, visitors will receive a small blue bag for recycling and a small clear bag for trash. Upon leaving the park, they will be asked to drop off the two bags at a designated area that has both large recycling and trash receptacles. By doing this, the hope is that visitors will think twice about the items that they throw in the trash bin thereby reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfills.
“This pilot project is a true partnership between the city and the community,” said Councilman Steven D. Ross, who represents Ward 6, where the park is located. “We are increasing the community’s awareness of recycling while also increasing the efficiency of our garbage collection system, which costs more than $1 million dollars annually.”
The city instituted a recycling program at most city parks during the last year. While the program has been very successful with at least a 50 percent recycling rate or higher, the goal is to increase that number and awareness of recycling in general. City staff continues to refine the program in an effort to increase recycling efforts.
Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs was chosen as the location for the pilot project since visitors must enter and exit through one access point. The program is a partnership between the city and the community. For more information, visit www.lasvegasnevada.gov/vegasgoesgreen.
